Car Wash
Before I was a novelist...
... I was a sales rep and my first company car was a Hillman Avenger.
In the 70s they had a phrase for cars built on Fridays.
“Friday Specials.”
The factory workers would often go on strike around Friday lunchtime.
Mine was on the production line during one of those strikes.
When they came back, they fitted the doors…
but they were from a different model and didn’t fit properly.
They sent the car out like that anyway.
I discovered this when I proudly took the family to the car wash.
That’s when we learned the doors didn't fit and weren’t waterproof.
